THE ST. ANDREW'S SOCIETY OF MONTREAL

The St. Andrew's Society of Montreal was founded in 1835 by Scottish business leaders and fur traders for the purpose of assisting immigrant Scots newly arrived in Canada. The Society has been actively involved in the community, educational and social life of Montreal ever since that time. Grants and scholarships are available for worthy students, there is direct and indirect assistance to individuals and families in need, and, as well, a full programme of social activities related to "things Scottish": arts, culture, tradition, etc. The Society raises funds for its charitable activities through various social and cultural events throughout the year.

Among such events are the following:
The St. Andrew's Ball (late November)
Burns Nicht Dinner (late January)
"A Taste of Scotland's Malts and Fine Foods," single malt Whiskies and Scottish cuisine (late October)

New members are enthusiastically welcomed.

THE BLACK WATCH (ROYAL HIGHLAND REGIMENT) OF CANADA

This is Canada's senior highland regiment, having been formed in 1862. An active militia regiment, it operates as a reserve unit in the Canadian Armed Forces, training soldiers who may be called upon in times of emergency, or for peace-keeping assignments.

Members must be at least seventeen years of age, Canadian citizens, in good health, and must meet enlistment criteria.

Training requires one weekend each month from May to September, and a minimum of two weeks during the summer. The Cadet Corps attracts teenage students, and there are many youth oriented activities for them (such as drill, rifle training, orienteering, communication techniques, etc.) The Corps meet on Saturday mornings and are eligible for military camps.

Piping, drumming, and highland dancing instruction is available free of charge, in collaboration with the St. Andrew's Society of Montreal.

Pipers are available for various social functions and may be contacted by calling 496-1686 #240.
